There is a recurring theme going on at the Chicago Bears’ training camp: This isn’t 2024 anymore.
The Bears’ coaching staff has been extremely tough on the players through just one day of training camp. Head coach Ben Johnson has led the charge with the way he’s been going at the offense. It appears that the issue is contagious, as it is being spread to his coaching staff, with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen also seeking a change within his unit.
Allen spoke with the media during training camp, where he shared the mentality, he has for each of his defensive players when it comes down to how things will go.
“You have to pay the toll. You have to pay the price. It’s a privilege to be on this defense. Training camp is going to be difficult.”
Dennis Allen on why he will be pushing his defense hard in training camp. “You have to pay the toll. You have to pay the price. It’s a privilege to be on this defense. Training camp is going to be difficult.”

The tone is set and the Bears’ coaching staff is not messing around in 2025
When inheriting a team that has missed the postseason four years in a row, something must give. The Bears’ coaching staff understands this better than anyone, as all three phases of the game must get better.
Last year, the Bears’ defense ranked 27th in total defense, allowing 354.3 yards per game. It was the rush defense that struggled and caused the dip, as they were 28th against the run, allowing 136.3 yards per game.
Allen and the Bears made changes on defense, adding Dayo Odeyingbo and Grady Jarrett to the defensive line. Chicago also selected Shemar Turner in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. They were brought in not to rush the passer, but to make sure they were stuffing the middle of the line.
The mindset is correct for this Bears team, as it is all about improving and not reverting to the old ways of losing. Allen is proving to be a tough coach who is asking a lot from his players, which is a positive.
