Chicago Bears second-year cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is at the center of the discussion over the Chicago Bears' embarrassing Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders.
Despite the Bears having over 90% chance of winning the game during the final minute of play, a Hail Mary touchdown pass from Commanders' rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has Chicago's coaching staff in the line of fire.
Above the coaching failures, Stevenson's actions on Sunday must addressed. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus didn't seem willing to address Stevenson's viral moment but veteran wide receiver DJ Moore did not hold back when asked about it during an interview on 670 The Score Monday morning.
“The captains were talking about how we need to really address that. I saw that he put something out that he was sorry, but we’ve still got to address it as a leadership group in front of the team.”
There's a troubling concern for the Bears and Eberflus. Whenever there is a moment where it is clear that expectations were not met, it is often the players who show more accountability than the coaching staff. Sure, the Bears are 4-3 on the season but Stevenson's showing on Sunday is a direct mocking of Eberflus and his supposed coaching motto.
Moore was asked about what the consequences would be for Stevenson but deferred the answer to the Bears' front office.
“I don’t know (what the punishment will be), that’s not up for us to do,” Moore said. “But we can address it as captains, and upstairs will have to do what they’re going to do.
There has to be some form of accountability for Stevenson after his antics on Sunday. The accountability won't come through way of the Bears cutting Stevenson but a benching against the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday should certainly be in play.
