Emari Demercado's touchdown has Chicago Bears fans wanting to fire Matt Eberflus at halftime
The Chicago Bears' first-half effort against the Arizona Cardinals has the feel of a Bears' locker room that has all but given up on their head coach Matt Eberflus.
After Bears' kicker Cairo Santos drilled home his third field goal of the day, moving the Bears to within a score of the Cardinals, Arizona running back Emari Demercado quickly cut through the Bears' defense for an easy score.
For a Bears' team that has prided themselves on holding opponents to 21 points or fewer, the unit has already allowed 21 points in the first half of their game against the Cardinals.
All the questions over whether or not Eberflus would have the Bears ready to overcome their self-created adversity from last week seem to have been answered with a resounding no. Beyond the struggles that the Bears' defense had during the first 30 minutes of the game on Sunday, the offense looked just as clustered as they did last week. During the opening two quarters of the game, Bears' rookie quarterback Caleb Williams completed 11 of 24 passes for a total of 137 yards.
However, to better emphasize the lack of discipline shown by Eberflus' coaching staff on Sunday, the Bears had 5 penalties for a total of 32 yards.
Short of the Bears' coming back during the second half, a loss to the Cardinals would continue Eberflus' losing streak for Sunday road games as the Bears' head coach. Given that this was meant to be the first season where Eberflus and the Bears had expectations of reaching the playoffs, a loss to the Cardinals would place the head coach firmly on the hot seat.
The Bears have never fired a head coach in-season during the history of their organization but Eberflus may prove there is a first time for everything.
