Entering the 2024 season, fullback Khari Blasingame was seen as a leader in the Chicago Bears locker room.

Signing with the Bears ahead of the 2022 season, the veteran fullback was rewarded with a two-year extension ahead of the 2023 season. Seen as an asset for the Bears in run protection, Blasingame's role with the team came into question immediately after the arrival of Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator.

In reviewing Waldron's offenses with the Seattle Seahawks, one thing was clear, the former offensive coordinator did not utilize the fullback position. That is why there was no real surprise that Blasingame did not last the full season with the Bears in 2024. Prior to their Week 8 game against the Washington Commanders last season, Blasingame was cut.

Apologies to Bears fans but we must revisit how cutting Blasingame immediately backfired for the Bears. While the Bears' loss to the Commanders will always be remembered for Jayden Daniels' Hail Mary heroics, it was also the game where Waldron tried to utilize a fullback dive on a goal-line play. Instead of having a traditional fullback like Blasingame on the roster, the handoff was to backup center Doug Kramer. Kramer, of course, fumbled.

If anything. it was a glaring example of how Waldron was not aware of the players he had at his disposal when he was the Bears offensive coordinator.

Waldron was fired the following month, but for the departed Blasingame, he finished the 2024 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, and after a roster move on Saturday, the veteran fullback has been elevated to the Eagles' 53-man roster for the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

There would be some form of irony if Blasingame wins the Super Bowl with the Eagles while Waldron is watching from home as he settles into his new role as the Jacksonville Jaguars' passing game coordinator.
