For those Chicago Bears fans who may not be aware that football is actually being played in June, the UFL is entering its championship game between the DC Defenders and the Louisville Kings.

Bears fans might be more intrigued to watch this game, especially given who is on the Kings' roster. Chicago might remember a running back named Ian Wheeler, who is now playing well in the UFL.

Wheeler ran wild in the UFL playoffs for the Kings as he finished as the Kings' leading rusher with seven carries for 89 yards and had an electric 51-yard touchdown run to give his team the lead in the fourth quarter of their 29-20 win over the St. Louis Battlehawks. Over the last two years, Wheeler has been in training camp with the Bears, as he was one of the leading rushers in the preseason last season with 100 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Ian Wheeler is on his way to being back in the NFL after UFL run

During the regular season in the UFL, Wheeler was one of the league's leading rushers, leading his team with 370 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He's expected to get some calls from the NFL once the Kings' season is over.

Wheeler is showing football fans much of what he proved last year with the Bears in the preseason, particularly his ability to break out on big runs. He can take the ball on the outside and explode for long gains.

Chicago is pretty packed at running back, but it would be hard for the Bears to ignore an opportunity to bring back a guy who has played well in the preseason for them. If Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson don't come calling, there will be plenty of other NFL teams looking for running backs who are in football shape and can still play.

Wheeler will be in Washington, D.C., for the United Bowl championship game, where he will have one last shot to prove to the NFL that he should be signed right after it's over. There's a strong chance that happens.
