It sure sounds like the Chicago Bears will be signing a veteran quarterback

For as much that was said last offseason about the Chicago Bears giving Caleb Williams one of the best landing spots a rookie quarterback has ever had, the more that is talked about the process, in hindsight, just confirms how wrong that thinking was.

While the Bears gave Williams an offense that had D'Andre Swift, Keenan Allen, and Rome Odunze, one addition that wasn't made was a veteran backup quarterback. The Bears entered the 2024 season with Tyson Bagent as their backup quarterback. Considering the 2024 season was Bagent's sophomore campaign in the NFL, he wasn't exactly the elder wise man that could show Williams the ropes of life in the NFL as a starting quarterback.

It sounds like Ryan Poles' realizes that was a mistake.

While speaking with Adam Hoge and Adam Jahns, Poles sounded like a general manager who will be signing a veteran quarterback before the start of the season.

It would be in the Bears' best interest to add a veteran quarterback

There would be several benefits to the Bears adding a veteran quarterback to their roster before the start of the season. First and foremost, Williams would benefit from a veteran who has starting experience. Adding someone like Joe Flacco would essentially give Williams an additional coach as a teammate.

As for Bagent, he is in the final year of the three-year contract he signed with the Bears when he went undrafted. For all the talk of what Bagent isn't as a starting quarterback in the NFL, he has proved that he is capable of filling in on a short-term basis and managing a .500 record. That's a valuable asset in the NFL. The assumption is that Bagent will likely look for an opportunity elsewhere next offseason. One that has a more clear path toward playing time.

Assuming that is the case, it wouldn't be out of the question that the Bears may trade Bagent before the start of the season if the market is right. While the return wouldn't be anything of much consequence, it would give the Bears added draft capital in future seasons. It is something they may have an interest in, especially if they already have a veteran quarterback in the fold.
