Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown was facing an uphill climb toward becoming the permanent head coach of the team despite receiving an endorsement from general manager Ryan Poles prior to the team's Week 18 game against the Green Bay Packers.
While speaking during the Bears' Pre-Game show on ESPN 1000, Poles confirmed that Brown would have an official interview for the position this week.
"He will get an interview, and I'm excited to hear his thoughts," Poles said. "Because he's been here. He's been here, he's seen and reflected just like we have on the past and how we got to this and why were the results, the results. So I'm excited to hear from his side on how we got here and how he would fix it."
The idea of Brown getting an interview seemed to be more of the Bears doing a courtesy to a coach who stepped int he middle of the dysfunction that was a season where the team fired their head coach and offensive coordinator in-season for the first time in the history of the organization.
Well, Brown may have added more stock to his candidacy on Sunday as he accomplished something on Sunday that his predecessor, Matt Eberflus, was never able to do, win a road game game on a Sunday. Beyond that, Eberflus was winless against the Packers during his time as the Bears' head coach coach.
With Cairo Santos' game-winning field goal on Sunday, the Bears not only ended their 10-game losing streak on the season but earned their first victory over Green Bay since the 2018 season.
Sunday's victory likely won't move the needle much in Brown's direction but there is something to be said that the Bears did not give up on their interim head coach. That wasn't the case for the Bears' locker room under Eberflus. If nothing else, Brown can point to Sunday's game for why his candidacy does have some merit.
