It wasn't an easy decision for the Chicago Bears when they had to decide between staying at number one overall and taking Caleb Williams or keeping Justin Fields, who had performed well for them. The Bears went with Williams, sending Fields to Pittsburgh, and now he's with the New York Jets.
Unfortunately, Fields suffered an injury during Thursday morning's practice and limped off the practice field before being carted inside. It's never good when a player has to be carted away from practice but with this injury being a non-contact one, that makes things even worse for Fields, who was going to be the starting quarterback for the Jets in 2025.
Justin Fields’ career just took another devastating turn
The Bears selected Fields 11th overall just four years ago, hoping that he'd be their franchise quarterback for years to come. Unfortunately, the team never accomplished what they hoped to with Fields running the offense and when the team held the number one overall pick (thanks to the Panthers) in 2024, they decided to stay in the top spot of the draft and add USC quarterback Caleb Williams to the fold.
Fields was then traded to Pittsburgh where he started six games (and appeared in 10 overall) and threw for over 1,100 yards, five touchdowns, and one pick. Fields signed with the Jets this offseason and it was a solid move for a Jets team that needed consistency at the position.
If Fields can't go, it'll be Tyrod Taylor starting games at quarterback for the Jets, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Taylor has been a journeyman quarterback throughout his career and can win games when called upon.
Still, this stinks for Fields. He was getting a chance to be a full-time starter with his new team and who knows if that chance will come around again? Hopefully he's okay and can start at quarterback for the Jets in 2025.
