It's been some time since Justin Fields was the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears, and he's now on his third team in as many years. The New York Jets starter is in the thick of his OTAs alongside a new no. 1 wide receiver.
Speaking of that top-tier weapon, a certain somebody had some notable words for Fields' old teammates.
Per The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson said he'd watch Fields film back when he was with the Bears and often think, "I would've caught that."
I suppose, Wilson isn't exactly wrong if he's directing those words at some key names in particular; as long as we're not throwing DJ Moore or Darnell Mooney into this conversation.
Garrett Wilson's criticism of former Bears wide receivers can be both harsh and true
Now, if we're talking a select few former Bears wide receivers, then Wilson is certainly on to something.
You could absolutely group some specific names into the category of "the Bears deserved better."
That group includes the likes of Equanimeous St. Brown, Dante Pettis, Velus Jones and Chase Claypool, who were all teammates at one point. Even Damiere Byrd and Marquise Goodwin could be lumped in there, too.
The point is, Wilson isn't wrong. Fields did have a brutal lack of talent around him at times, whether that was in the wide receiver room or up front across his offensive line.
After going 4-2 as a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, Fields opted to sign with the Jets on a 2-year, $40 million contract. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is still awaiting a decision from longtime Bears arch nemesis Aaron Rodgers.
It's a pretty funny triangle the three teams have in terms of all the different connections, but one thing remains clear above all else: the Bears are in the best shape under center with Caleb Williams.
