Justin Jefferson could make life a living hell for Bears' secondary in Week 2

Welp, here we go, Chicago Bears fans. Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson is in town for Week 2, and his timing couldn't be worse.

Jefferson is coming off a great game with the Vikings in their 39-22 win over the Green Bay Packers. He caught eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

As for the Bears' defense, well, the secondary got torched by Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young in their 59-37 win on the opening weekend. Chicago allowed 353 yards and three touchdowns, but rookie Malik Muhammad did get an interception in the victory. That doesn't mean, though, that the Bears will be competitive on defense against Jefferson and the Vikings.

Bears are in for a rude awakening against Justin Jefferson and the Vikings in Week 2

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise that Jefferson could go off on the Bears since it's happened far too often over the years. He has caught 59 passes for 790 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games against the Bears.

The timing is just off, with the Bears' secondary looking like the worst version of itself. Chicago fans thought that with two-time Pro Bowl Jaylon Johnson 100% healthy and Tyrique Stevenson on a contract year, they would be in better shape in 2026.

Not the case. Not. Even. Close.

Johnson allowed 127 receiving yards last year, the most in the NFL. Stevenson finished with the eighth most receiving yards allowed in the league with 77.

Not-so-fun fact about Jefferson: he is averaging 90.2 yards per game in his career. Yeah, that's a nightmare stat for one of the NFL's worst pass defenses.

The real question is whether Johnson is even up to the task of covering Jefferson after his Week 1 performance. Bears head coach Ben Johnson told the media on Monday that he spoke with Stevenson and Jaylon about their performances and that both took ownership and know they can play better.

This is a challenging time for the Bears' secondary, which is already playing without Coby Bryant and Kyler Gordon. Xavier Woods was ruled out for the Panthers game, leaving three potential starters out for the Bears.

Jaylon Johnson has a ton of pressure on him to get the job done against Jefferson because he is the only man for the job. Muhammad had a great rookie debut, but he didn't have to cover someone like Jefferson. Stevenson is clearly proving week by week that he is no longer reliable in the secondary until he can show otherwise.

The only hope for the Bears is for Johnson to find that 2024 form that made him so great and shut down Jefferson. Chicago is bracing for another game where the offense might have to put up at least 30 points to win. If Johnson can magically turn it around and dominate Jefferson, that could be the turning point the defense needs in the 2026 season.
