Last season, safety Kevin Byard proved to any and all of his doubters that he could still play at a high level. The Chicago Bears saw one of their leaders turn back the clock with seven interceptions, becoming one of the highlights of the team's surprising 2025 campaign.
As Byard's contract ran out, though, he entered free agency and there wasn't a sure feeling either way, whether he'd return to Chicago or not.
As it turned out, Byard would end up joining an old friend, Mike Vrabel, signing a 1-year deal with the New England Patriots. On Thursday, when the Patriots introduced some of their newest signings, Byard spoke to the New England media.
When speaking about coming to the Patriots, Byard's comments would sting a little bit to any Bears fan listening:
“This was my top destination to go to… the culture of this team, this organization, it’s obviously a winning culture. I think the pieces that they have in place… It makes it attractive for any free agent to wanna come here.”
Kevin Byard didn't intentionally throw shade, but he caught Chicago Bears fans' attention
I'll give Byard credit for his words. Of course, the Patriots are coming off a season that saw them on the league's biggest stage. Joining the defending AFC Champions is arguably the second-best destination for any free agent right now, next to the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
Reuniting with Vrabel from their days with the Tennessee Titans makes sense as well, with the Patriots knowing they'd lose some of their own free agents, like safety Jaylinn Hawkins.
Chicago, meanwhile, is absolutely a destination that players want to come to now. With Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams in place, it's an attractive place to be. I would bet the Bears were a close second to Byard choosing the Patriots, in the end.
These initial comments are yet another reminder, though, that the Bears very well could have kept him. Byard was introduced after signing a contract for a fairly friendly number. $9 million isn't out-of-this-world type of money, and Ryan Poles could have made something like that happen.
Now, Chicago will have to move on and find a running mate for the newly signed Coby Bryant, whom the Bears snagged as a free agent from those Super Bowl champs. After the Bryant signing, Byard's fate was essentially sealed.

With still so many free agents available and the draft ahead, the Bears won't be short on options.
