Chicago Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon is currently one game into his minimum four-game stint on IR to start the season, as a lingering calf injury lingers a little too long for anyone's taste. At the front of that frustration line is head coach Ben Johnson, followed closely by general manager Ryan Poles.
Gordon has taken his rehab process away from Halas Hall, which is his (or any injured player's) prerogative if he wants to work with his own people. He also used NFL Network's Ian Rapoport as the vessel for that news and general optimism about his return timeline. It all looked like a middle finger to the Bears for having the "audacity" to put him on IR, when he has shown no signs of being close to playing.
Gordon has also taken to posting social media videos that show him moving around pretty well. There is, of course, a difference between running around on grass in a training session and being ready to put pads on to play football, but he appears to be trying to troll the Bears.
If we know anything about Johnson and Poles, they aren't taking kindly to being trolled by a player they made the highest-paid slot corner in the league roughly 17 months ago. Gordon has played a total of five games, including last year's playoffs, since getting that payday.
Kyler Gordon update further confirms the Bears are (or should be) done with him
In a notes column after the Bears' Week 1 win over the Carolina Panthers, Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune reported he spoke with Gordon's trainer.
"I reached out to Montel Fleming", Biggs wrote, "who is working with Gordon on body alignment and injury prevention in order for the cornerback to be activated from the physically unable to perform list so he can get on the field after missing the offseason program, training camp and preseason."
"Fleming answers the phone saying, “Dr. Moe,” and he goes by Foot Doctor Moe. He was introduced to Gordon by Jaylon Johnson, with whom Fleming has worked since the 2021 season. It was Fleming who reached out to Johnson after viewing his Instagram account."
According to Dan Bernstein of 312 Sports, in the wake of Biggs' reporting, there are some questions about "Dr. Moe".
"Here's what we do know about Montel Fleming", Bernstein said, before running through a lengthy list of places Fleming has lived across the country.
"Montel Fleming has a list of aliases here he goes by", Bernstein added, before running through a list assumed names.
Bernstein also shared how there's no evidence Fleming even has a college degree, let alone one in kinesiology, physiology, or anything along that line. Bernstein also noted how Fleming has a bit of a criminal record.
All of the information Bernstein cited came from a background check, which anyone (up to and including the Bears) could hypothetically do.
Gordon is working with Fleming based on a referral from Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson. Biggs suggested the Bears are "are allowing Gordon some space here, because they want him back on the field" as Fleming apparently works in tandem with a chiropractor in an effort to get him cleared to return.
And of course, days before the Bears play the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, Gordon came out with a new workout video.

That noise you hear is a collective shaking of heads from anyone who's at all attached to the Bears, from team personnel to fans to anyone who covers the team. Teammates may love Gordon, as Herb Howard of The Bigs Media suggested during a recent appearance on 104.3 The Score, but it's safe to say pretty much everyone else would like the situation to be done, one way or another.
The ultimate authority on how the situation with Gordon ends is the team, with Johnson and Poles leading the way. But with him using the leeway to rehab on his own to work with a questionable trainer, while taking basically a weekly troll shot at the two front-facing members of the organization via social media videos, maybe Gordon no longer wants to play for the Bears.

If that's how he feels, and he says so (if he hasn't said so already), Johnson and Poles will presumably be happy to grant Gordon's wish when the time is right.
