Matt Eberflus gets a resounding endorsement from a surprising voice
It hasn't been an easy week for Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus.
As if losing to the Washington Commanders on a Hail Mary touchdown pass wasn't bad enough, the 24-hour aftermath of that loss on Sunday saw Eberflus' grip on the Bears locker room become unglued. Between Tyrique Stevenson engaging with fans while the final play of the game on Sunday was underway or several of the team's captains calling out the coaching staff in various interviews on Monday, it seems that Eberflus has lost accountability with the players on the Bears' roster.
Given the fallout from the loss on Sunday, it seems that Eberflus has placed himself back on the hot seat. There was a case that the Bears should have fired Eberflus last season but the front office opted for bringing the head coach back for a third season. It would seem that the Bears desperately need a win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday to advance a news cycle that is calling for a head coaching change.
Along those lines, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was a former defensive assistant under Eberflus and while speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Gannon offered an endorsement of the current Bears head coach.
There is no question that this is an important week for Eberflus. Given the public outcry stemming from what has been said by Bears players since the loss on Sunday, many have compared Eberflus' current locker room to the fractured locker room the Bears had under Marc Trestman.
It seems that Eberflus is teetering the line of reaching a point of no return. For the second time this season, there have been players calling out the coaching staff for lack of awareness and preparation. Considering this was a trend last season, continued offenses this season likely does push Ryan Poles toward making a change at head coach once the season concludes.
