With Mike McCarthy no longer in Dallas, of course the Chicago Bears have interest in interviewing him for their head coaching vacancy. Personally, I have McCarthy as the fourth-best option in this coaching cycle, but no longer having him in Dallas could actually lead to the Bears losing out on the top candidate.
Right now, it seems like Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles are interviewing anyone with a pulse who has any football knowledge. If you have yet to do so, I suggest submitting your resume if you have ever built up a team in franchise mode and won multiple championships on Madden -- does not matter what year of Madden either. Knowing that I dominated Madden 2009 for over a decade in my younger years should be enough for an interview.
With McCarthy no longer in Dallas, it is not that Bears fans need to worry so much about Warren and Poles hiring McCarthy as the next Bears head coach. The concern is that a team with a solid quarterback and legit weapons on both sides of the ball has a head coaching vacancy to fill. We all know that Jerry Jones is not afraid to spend money. Could Jones be why the Chicago Bears lose out on Ben Johnson?
The Chicago Bears could have another competitor for Ben Johnson
The consensus top candidate for any head coaching vacancy this offseason is clearly Ben Johnson. You will find a few fans and analysts who say otherwise, but Johnson has a proven record as a top playcaller in the league. That does not always equate to being a great head coach, but I would not be upset or fault the Chicago Bears if they hired Johnson and he turned out to be a bust as a head coach. This team has yet to hire any coach within my top three in a coaching cycle and I want it to happen just this once.
Johnson is not anything like Matt Nagy. He installs the plays and calls the plays on gameday. This isn't Nagy holding a clipboard and choosing what Andy Reid put together. The problem is that despite rumors that Dallas is interested in Deion Sanders as their next head coach, Ben Johnson could be the consolation prize if the Sanders hype fizzles out.
The only saving grace could be that by waiting for Mike McCarthy's contract to expire, the Cowboys cannot interview Ben Johnson until the Lions' season comes to an end. Maybe that delay is enough to keep the Cowboys out of the conversation. The other obvious thing that could happen is that Jerry Jones does do the crazy thing and sways Sanders to move on from Colorado and jump to being a head coach in the NFL. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but until I see Ben Johnson's name confirmed as the Bears' head coach in 2025, I have strong doubts and this situation just got a little worse.
