Mike Tomlin is making a realization that Chicago Bears fans already know
Since starting the season undefeated through the first three weeks of the 2024 NFL season, former Chicago Bears' quarterback Justin Fields and the Pittsburgh Steelers have lost two of their last three games.
Fields and the Steelers were victorious over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday but Steelers' head coach Mike Tomlin sounded like a head coach ready to make a change at the quarterback position when speaking with reporters on Tuesday.
"I got comfortable with his ability to display his health [last week]," Tomlin said of Wilson. "... Now it's about knocking the rust off. He is in consideration this week. We'll see where that leads us, man. Both guys at the quarterback position are scheduled to work [Wednesday] and we'll just walk it day by day. All geared toward putting ourselves in best position to win the football game."
Fields had been starting in place of an injured Russell Wilson for the Steelers this season. Fields and Wilson were in a quarterback competition during the preseason before Tomlin opted for Wilson to be the team's starting quarterback for the regular season. A calf injury has prevented Willson from fulfilling Tomlin's decision.
Justin Fields has the same limitation he had with the Chicago Bears.
Fields had 10 total touchdowns on the season with only 1 interception, and while there has been marginal improvement in his mechanics, he remains plagued with awareness concerns in terms of when to throw the ball to an open receiver. For as much as had been made about Fields' hot start with the Steelers, it's worth noting his season totals are on par with his career averages. In other words, Fields remains an excellent athlete playing the quarterback position but is limited in the passing game. It's the realization that made the Bears turn to Caleb Williams and is likely why Tomlin is eyeing a change for the Steelers.
As Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune points out, Tomlin stepping this far out likely means that Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the Steelers on Sunday. Despite Wilson potentially being the starting quarterback of the Steelers on Sunday, the Bears remain in a position to gain fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh. As Biggs notes, Fields will only need to play 11 more quarters in order to appear in 51% of the Steelers' offensive snaps this season.
