The whole NFL world seems to be high on Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson after his stellar start to year one as a head man.
Chicago is off to an incredible 9-3 record, highlighted by the NFL's best rushing attack, number one turnover creators on defense in the league, and Johnson going shirtless after yet another massive win, this time to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears are on top of the world, and everyone has taken notice.
The Athletic's Mike Sando spoke with a couple of NFL coaches to get their thoughts on Johnson and the work he is doing. One praised what he has done with developing quarterback Caleb Williams, and another praised his ability to adjust his game plan in the middle of the contest.
"The No. 1 thing that Ben Johnson is doing with Caleb is teaching him how to play quarterback," one play-caller told Sanfo. "He is not doing anything different with his throwing motion or anything like that. What is the down and distance? If it's second-and-3, we don't need to throw the fade here."
"Ben threw the ball in the first quarter, and then he said, 'Am I nuts throwing in the wind with Caleb Williams when I can just run the ball with two backs?’" another coach said to Sando. "He adjusted, and that was the impressive part. Vic wants to sit in the two-high shell and roll guys down late. Ben ran in the A-gaps a lot, so it was quick hitting, and the safeties can't help on the inside fits."
Johnson is in a league of his own after one year with Bears
Of course, the accuracy issues are front and center with Williams, but he's playing much better football under Johnson than he did last year under Matt Eberflus. Williams is making quicker decisions, taking fewer sacks, and showing more of the natural arm talent he has when running out of the pocket.
Johnson has also benefited from arguably the best rushing attack he has ever coached, including the ones he dealt with in Detroit. D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai are pacing to have a combined 2,000 yards rushing, with a ton of credit needing to be given to the rebuilt offensive line that has stepped up.
