Every year, you see a long-standing veteran with a team leave to join a contender and try to make a run at a Super Bowl; which could end up being the case for the Chicago Bears.

Usually, it is the player leaving Chicago to find a winning team, but this year, the Bears are listed as a team that could attract a veteran free agent if they were in a ring-chasing mode.

Daire Carragher of Pro Football Focus listed Demario Davis as a player who could leave the New Orleans Saints and try to win a Super Bowl ring during what could be the last year of his NFL career. He notes that if that is the case, one team that could be a great fit is the Bears.

Will Chicago Bears pursue Demario Davis in NFL free agency?

On paper, this makes a lot of sense. Chicago did not have the linebacker play needed last year, and still got by. Tremaine Edmunds is due $17 million, and the team would save all but $2.4 million if they let him go this offseason. The savings of nearly $15 million make it a no-brainer that they move on.

This would open up a hole for Davis, who had a cap hit of just $6.9 million last season, according to Spotrac. He is going to be 37 years old this offseason and has made the money that he would be signing for $6 million or less just to make one run at a Super Bowl with Chicago.

So, the Bears would be saving close to $10 million in net by moving on from Edmunds and adding Davis. More than that, they would be upgrading the player.

Edmunds is bigger and faster than Davis, but Davis plays faster and smarter than Edmunds. He is a five-time All-Pro player and is still playing at a reasonably high level.

Perhaps more valuable than anything is that he has five appearances in the playoffs. He has not been able to get over the hump and make a run, but he knows what it takes to get there and to turn it up when it is time.

This is the type of move that a young team that just had its first playoff heartbreak should be looking to do. They can keep the fire lit, and they have someone fresh who knows how to lead in the locker room. If Davis wanted to leave New Orleans after his long career with the Saints, the Bears would have to be interested.
