Some believe the Chicago Bears still don't have a concrete answer at running back, while others are cautiously optimistic or even firmly on the Kyle Monangai hype train.
Yet, one NFL insider wants us to remember it was only two years ago when the Bears drafted Roschon Johnson in the fourth round. Not only that, but Johnson could have a real role within this offense.
"I think he gives Roschon Johnson a shot to win a legit role in the offense," wrote Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
"I’m intrigued to see how that looks. Johnson was stuck behind Bijan Robinson at Texas, and has struggled to find footing over his first two years as a pro, but he’s got ability and, now a clean slate. He also complements D’Andre Swift nicely."
The Roschon Johnson hype isn't dead yet
Breer made a good point which was often brought up back when Johnson was drafted. He was the backup to Bijan Robinson, who wound up as a top-10 pick. Had Johnson been the starter, he'd have likely gone even higher than the fourth round in 2023.
Johnson was also new to the position as of college. A former quarterback, Johnson has still been developing as a running back.
I wouldn't put it past Ben Johnson to unlock Roschon within this Bears offense. He could be used very similarly to David Montgomery back when (Ben) Johnson was in Detroit. (Roschon) Johnson has that physical running style while also being able to catch passes.
For anyone looking at his two years worth of numbers and pointing to a low yards-per-carry average, remember Johnson was used in short yardage situations often, especially on the goal line last season. Not to mention, the Bears' offensive line has been atrocious.
This very well could be the year we see the former Texas product take a leap. Maybe, just maybe, he'll get a legitimate shot at breaking loose.
