The Chicago Bears' coaching search has been extensive, widespread and, let's be honest, it's getting downright weird.
Sunday morning, the coaching saga took an unexpected turn.
Well, if we're being honest, there are really no "unexpected" turns to be had within Halas Hall at this point. The Bears are accustomed to doing things backwards and the fan base has learned to live with this awful sense of normalcy.
In any event, Sunday morning we received some odd news in a long line of the same when it was revealed the Bears were interviewing former Tennessee Titans head coach Eddie George for their head coaching vacancy.
George is currently the head coach over at Tennessee State, an FCS program that represents George's first coaching gig to date. Yet, the Bears are giving him a shot at an NFL head coaching position.
Say what you will about George and any seriousness from the Bears' end on actually hiring him, but just the mere fact that he received an interview is a bit stunning. However, one NFL insider briefly offered his perspective on the matter.
Eddie George has one of the top traits Ryan Poles is looking for in the Bears' next head coach
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer included a bit about the Bears interviewing George in his most recent column and explained why Chicago would be interested.
"Eddie George getting an interview in Chicago is at least interesting. Anyone who’s spent five minutes around George knows he has the personality to lead," Breer wrote.
We know good and well that general manager Ryan Poles is looking for a "leader of men" above all else in this process, and George certainly has that quality. He was a leader on the field and has taken that attribute to the coaching ranks.
More Bears news:
But, is he ready to coach an NFL team? Breer also noted that George would definitely need an all-star coaching staff around him in order to succeed right away. Would he be able to put that type of staff together? Does he have the connections, this early in his coaching career?
Hiring George would be a massive risk. It would also be a total Bears move as Poles tries to outsmart every other organization by going an unorthodox route rather than taking one of the top, obvious choices in front of him.
At this point, I don't think George necessarily has a real shot at getting the job. But, Poles was right on one thing when he said there would be some names that will surprise us in this process. That, folks, is for sure.
