The 2025 NFL Combine is fully upon us. We are seeing draft prospects put their full athleticism on display. From lifting weights to running drills, prospects need to be in great shape. Recently, former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Anthony "Spice" Adams revealed that once in the NFL, players can actually be fined if not in shape.
If you are not subscribed to Whistle Sports, I highly suggest doing so now.
Whistle is owned by DAZN - the global sports streaming service that offers live and on-demand sports coverage in over 200 countries. They have plenty of great content, but more specifically, they have been putting out a "Let Them Cook" series that features chef Jonathan Zaranaga.
He welcomes athletes, teaches them how to cook, and asks them questions about their personal lives and their sport. Previous episodes featured the Chicago Bears' backup quarterback Tyson Bagent and running back D'Andre Swift. In the most recent episode, Spice Adams joins Chef Zaranaga. You can find interesting information about players, teams, and the league.
Within their conversation, Chef Zaranaga asked Adams, as a defensive tackle, was there a certain weight you have to hit? Spice Adams said they want you to be like 300 pounds. Chef Zaranaga responds by saying that it must be constant work, and Adams makes it clear that it wasn't difficult for him because he's been 300 pounds most of his life. What was interesting about this conversation came next, though. Adams explains that teams will actually fine you if you do not stay in shape. What's even crazier is how they go about doing it.
"They will fine you if you are over. Let me tell you, it will be $500 per pound, per day. So if they say you need to be 300 pounds and then you show up at 310, that is $5,000. And then if you are 310 still the next day, that is an extra $5,000. You will get the weight down."Anthony "Spice" Adams
This is just one thing we learned about Spice Adams and the league in this series. If you watch the full video you'll learn how Spice Adams doesn't do spicey, how he would still love to be playing in the NFL and more.
