The Chicago Bears surprised many when they went deep into day three of the 2025 NFL draft without drafting a running back. However, according to a recent video that the New England Patriots released, it was not for lack of trying.

According to the video, the Bears tried to move up from pick 39 to 38 with the Patriots, and the presumption is that they would have drafted TreVeyon Henderson with the pick. The Patriots took Henderson, and the Bears stood pat and ended up with Luther Burden.

This can make sense when focusing on the idea that the Bears needed a running back and the selection of Burden was a bit surprising and has brought questions about how the wide receiver room may be handled.

It also makes sense when considering the team had been heavily linked to Henderson with that pick. The Patriots had Rhamondre Stevenson and were not tied to a running back as much, but they saw him as the best skill player on the board and stuck to their grades by taking him.

It is fair to wonder if the Bears offered more than; maybe they could have landed Henderson. Still, they must not have been too dead set on Henderson because they only offered an additional seventh-round pick to make the move. So, while it can be confirmed that the Bears would have preferred Henderson over Burden, they certainly are not disappointed, and the grades could not have been substantially different.

With the failed trade for Henderson, the Bears clearly wanted to address the running back position much sooner than they did. Now, with Kyle Monangai added to the mix, it seems that the Bears will first see what they have at the running back position before making a move for a veteran.
