The Chicago Bears' defense featured plenty of standout players who could end up being bigger contributors to the team than expected, but one stood out from the rest.
Pro Football Focus writer Mason Cameron picked one player from each position for guys who had breakout performances in the preseason and are emerging as potential stars. For defensive end, Cameron selected Austin Booker.
"The 2024 fifth-round pick is making a name for himself early in his second year, tearing up camp and producing off the edge. Booker is a vicious pass rusher, having produced an impressive 93.8 PFF pass-rushing grade and nine pressures — including an NFL-leading five sacks — and a 25.9% pass-rush win rate this preseason.
An unfortunate knee injury knocked Booker out of the Bears’ preseason Week 2 matchup. The severity remains unclear, but should he miss time, it will be a tough loss for the team's defense."
Once Booker recovers, he's going to be a difference maker
Booker had a great preseason, during which he recorded four sacks in two games played. Three of those sacks came in the Bears' 24-24 tie to the Miami Dolphins.
Entering his second season, Booker was a rotational backup for the team in his rookie season last year with 21 tackles, four quarterback hits, and 1.5 sacks. He showed flashes of being great, as he was dominant last preseason as well.
What Bears fans are looking for from Booker is to show it in the regular season. With a little more experience in the NFL now, Booker feels like someone who can step up and play better. Many in the media have been picking Booker as a breakout candidate for 2025.

There is going to be a bit of a waiting period after Booker's injury in the preseason, which will keep him out. Once he's back, he should be able to help Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo round out what should be a more improved pass rush this season.
