5 stats Chicago Bears fans need to know following Week 3 loss
By Peter Jurich
80%
The Bears finished Sunday's contest with an impressive 80% 4th down conversion rate, resulting from a nearly flawless four out of five successful attempts. Of course, as great as the four successful plays were, the main focus will and should be the offense's lone 4th down failure, a questionable speed option call on the goalline that ultimately cost the team three points, if not more.
The play never had much of a shot considering the multitude of missed blocks up front, but the option attempt near the end of the first half was perhaps the most obvious example of bad playcalling and questionable personnel choices. D'Andre Swift and Khalil Herbert are both talented and relatively physical rushers, but power back Roschon Johnson may have been the better choice to carry the ball at least once on the goal line. Additionally, the play call left a lot to be desired, and running a QB option to the short side of the field did not help create a lot of space for the offense to work with. Ultimately, the offense's ability to convert fourth down attempts at a high rate is somewhat encouraging, but the unit needs to bring their best when the moment demands it, and they were unable to convert the attempt that ultimately mattered the most.
363
On a more optimistic note, Caleb Williams finished Sunday with by far his highest passing total of 363 yards. Although his performance may ultimately be marred by three total turnovers, the rookie quarterback displayed the oft-unreal passing abilities that made him the enticing first-overall selection just a few months ago.
While the team continues to struggle to find their footing early in the season, Williams' improvements as a passer are palpable. In fact, after being unable to break 100 yards through the air just two weeks ago, Williams' yardage on Sunday is the second-highest single-game mark for a quarterback through three weeks (pending both Monday night contests). It is also worth noting that Williams' total against the Colts is already the highest mark for a Bears' rookie in franchise history, and the former Heisman winner may yet set that record again this season.
1st
After quieter outings in each of the first two games, the Bears saw a lot of production from both of their 1st round picks, with Williams and Rome Odunze connecting in the third quarter for each of their 1st career touchdowns.
Williams' career day was accompanied by a breakout performance from Odunze, who totaled over 100 yards and a score on just six catches. With Keenan Allen sidelined with an injury for the second straight week, Odunze seamlessly stepped into a prime offensive role and showcased the big play abilities that make him such an intriguing target for a talented passer like Williams. As the season rolls on, the rookie connection will only continue to flourish, but Sunday's loss was perhaps a glimpse into the future that Bears fans can soon expect.
