Could Bravvion Roy make the Chicago Bears 53-man roster?
The Chicago Bears claimed Bravvion Roy on waivers, after he was let go by the Carolina Panthers. Roy was a former sixth-round pick entering his fourth NFL season with the team. So, with the Bears claiming him, they pick up the last year of his rookie contract. It is not an expensive salary, and it is not guaranteed, so the question is, will Bravvion Roy make the roster?
It is easy to see why the Panthers let him go. First, he was drafted out of Baylor, and he played at Baylor for Matt Rhule. Rhule drafted him to the Panthers, so the connection was obviously there. Now, the coaching staff is completely changed, and this group is not as familiar or as invested in Roy. Considering this is the last year of his deal, if the team did not see him in their short term plans, they probably did right by him in letting him go.
Now, he has a chance to catch on somewhere new, rather than being in the dog house of a staff who is not invested in him. Still, beyond souring from the new coaching staff, even Rhule and his group was struggling to find usage.
Roy played 419 snaps as a rookie, but that dropped down 341 snaps in his second NFL season. Last year, he played just 299, showing that even the old coaching staff was frustrated.
Roy is 6'1" and 330 pounds, so his role is pretty defined. He will not leave the A-gap as a nose tackle. When looking at the Chicago Bears, Gervon Dexter, Zacch Pickens and Justin Jones are all better in the 3-technique. Andrew Billings is the top nose tackle, but Roy could end up as the backup behind him. The issue is that a backup nose tackle does not guarantee himself a job.
He will be competing against seventh round rookie Travis Bell on the third-team for the fifth or sixth spot in the rotation. The team may keep five interior lineman, but that is not a lock. So, these two may be competing for a roster spot, or just a practice squad spot.
Bravvion Roy has a chance to make the roster, but it is not likely.
