Chicago Bears' veteran quarterback Brett Rypien is technically the number three quarterback on the team's depth chart, but everything suggests that he will be competing for the backup job. First, Shane Waldron brought him in after working with him on both the Rams and the Seahawks. They have experience together.

More than this, while the Bears did list Bagent as the backup on the initial depth chart, they listed Rypien in the same slot, suggesting there is room for the veteran to unseat the second-year quarterback as the team's backup.

Bagent started the Hall of Fame game and played well. He completed two of three pass attempts on the only drive he had of the night. So, he should still be ahead. However, Rypien played fantastic and many took notice.

Brett Rypien's Hall of Fame Game performance adds to idea there is a backup quarterback competition.

Rypien went 11-15 with 166 yards and three touchdowns. He was lights out. Yes, the competition was not much, but when a number three is competing for the backup that is all that you need to see.

Bagent should not be worried yet, but he has to know that Rypien is looking to unseat him as the backup quarterback. Rypien has said that he is all about being the leader in the quarterback room and helping develop the younger arms. Still, if Williams got hurt, he would love to get the call, and it could help his career beyond Chicago.

It would seem that Bagent will have an extended look in the Bears' second preseason game on August 10. Caleb Williams is expected to start and likely play most of the first quarter. This means that Bagent could have the entire second quarter at his disposal while Rypien is the quarterback for the Bears in the second half of the game.
