Last year, one of the greatest joys a Chicago Bears fan had was watching how the defense improved over the second half of the season. Going from an embarrassing start to the 2023 campaign to ending as the league's top run defense and a top-10 unit in many categories, these Bears are headed in the right direction.

The Monsters of the Midway just might, indeed, be returning.

As the Bears enter free agency starting with the legal tampering period next Monday, they are sure to be interested in adding to their defensive line. Both the defensive end and defensive tackle position could use additional depth, with potentially a starting spot being open at both areas.

Fortunately, there are a ton of free agents available across the defensive line this year. Let's talk about five of the top guys Chicago could pursue.

Jonathan Greenard, DE

Coming off a breakout season, Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard figures to command a lot of attention in free agency. Some might argue that he could potentially be a one-year wonder after his 12.5 sacks last season. But, I would also argue for those to remember his 2021 campaign that saw him tally 8.0 sacks that year.

We know he's a capable pass rusher, and he was a huge asset to a Texans defense last year opposite Will Anderson. If the Bears paired Greenard with Sweat, he'd once again be opposite a strong pass rusher and it would allow less pressure on him.

Greenard is only 26 years old and is set to turn 27 in May. He is entering the thick of his prime and, although he'll likely command a pretty hefty contract, he could be the type of player to truly unlock this defensive line's potential going forward.
