Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Draft: David Montgomery, RB

Selection: Third Round (73rd overall)

This draft ended up being a tough one for Chicago. In all fairness to Pace, the Bears were without a first or second-round pick due to the Khalil Mack trade and trading up for Anthony the year prior.

As a result, the Bears were not put on the clock until the 73rd pick. There the Bears took Iowa State running back David Montgomery, who served as the team’s primary ball carrier for the next four seasons. While he left Chicago in free agency this offseason for the Detroit Lions, he still made a mark in his time with the Bears.

Montgomery was a good all-around back and left it all on the field. He was far from a home run, but considering the other selections from this draft were Riley Ridley, Duke Shelley, Kerrith Whyte Jr., and Stephen Denmark, there isn’t another viable option.

In retrospect, this draft was the beginning of the end of the Matt Nagy Bears. The team was riding coming off a 12-4 season, but having limited draft picks and missing on the few that they had made it impossible for the team to recapture that 2018 magic. Still, Montgomery gave the Bears a solid bang for their buck.
