No. 3 Chicago Bears disappointment from Week 2: Justin Fields
The day has finally come. The day Chicago Bears fans have been hoping to avoid since drafting Justin Fields in 2021. The day that Chicago Bears fans have to be hit with truth serum and admit that Justin Fields has been disappointing thus far in 2023.
This isn't a "Trade Justin Fields" campaign, nor is it a "The Chicago Bears should quit on Justin Fields" campaign.
Simply, Justin Fields has been disappointing this season.
Does that mean he can't turn the season around? Absolultely not. Ideally, he does turn it around.
Specifically this game, Justin Fields looked lost. On plays where receivers were as open as open gets, Fields holds onto the ball too long and takes a sack.
Now, Fields isn't the only one to blame, as play-calling has been rather suspect as well, but Fields isn't blameless. There are parts of his game that have seemingly regressed since last season, and it's all very confusing for those who watched Justin Fields last year.
Justin Fields has and likely will always be one of the most athletically talented players on any given football field. That said, quarterbacks don't make it in the NFL off talent alone nowadays.
Just like offenses work to be able to defeat any defense in its path, defenses do the same. So, when they play Justin Fields, they know that if they can defend against the screen and his wicked athleticism, they'll probably be okay.
So far this season, Justin Fields hasn't impressed with his arm. He hasn't been terrible, but he also hasn't been incredible. And if we're being honest, he's been closer to the terrible side of the spectrum than the incredible side.
Whether it's him losing confidence in himself, him not trusting his eyes or a lack of ability to read the intricacies of an NFL defense, something isn't clicking this year.
This was supposed to be the year when Justin Fields no longer has to do everything himself because he has a weapon like D.J. Moore. However, this is probably the worst Justin Fields has looked, per the eye test.
There's still plenty of time for Justin Fields to turn it around, but as things stand currently, the Chicago Bears' quarterback scouting department could be busy this offseason.
