At the end of the 2022-2023 NFL season, the Chicago Bears ended up with the worst record in football which led to them having the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Rumors upon rumors swirled around what GM Ryan Poles was going to do with the pick. Poles ultimately decided to trade it to the Carolina Panthers which saw them land star wideout D.J Moore a first-round swap in 2023, the Panthers first in 2024 and a second in 2025.

The first reason Bears fans should love this move other than adding D.J Moore is this is the first time since 2003 that the team has had multiple picks in the first round. The last time this happened the team would selected Michael Haynes D-end from Penn ST and Rex Grossman QB from Florida.

The second big reason is since 2010, teams that pick a QB with the first-overall pick typically don't finish the following season with a stellar record. Most of the time they find themselves somewhere in the top 15 when it comes to draft selection. Bryce Young is most likely not an exception. So where do the numbers say the Chicago Bears will likely be picking thanks to the Panthers' picks?

Teams and QBs the year after being slected first overall

  • 2010- Sam Bradford Rams- Finished with a record of 7-9 and held the 14 pick.
  • 2011- Cam Newton Panthers- Finished with a record of 6-10 and held the 9th pick.
  • 2012- Andrew Luck Colts- Finished with a record of 11-5 and held the 24th pick.
  • 2015- Jamies Winston Buccaneers- Finished with a record of 6-10 and held the 9th pick before making a draft day trade.
  • 2016- Jared Goff Rams- (traded up with the Titans) Finished with a record of 4-12 giving the Titans the 5th pick.
  • 2018- Baker Mayfield Browns- Finished with a record of 7-8-1 and held pick 17 before trading away for Odell Beckham Jr.
  • 2019- Kyler Murray Cardinals- Finished with a record of 5-10-1 and held the 8th pick.
  • 2020- Joe Burrow Bengals- Finished with a record of 4-11-1 and held the 5th pick.
  • 2021- Trevor Lawernce Jaguars- Finished with a record of 3-14 and held the 1st pick.

What does all this mean for the Chicago Bears

Taking an average of all the picks it slots the Bears at pick number 10 which might be a little later than some Bears fans might want. But only three out of the last nine teams have made it out of the top ten range and if you take those teams out the Bears would now be slotted in at the sixth spot. Either way, the numbers say the Bears will have a top-ten pick ranging from 6-10.
