If you were like me, it may have taken you a little longer to tune into episode 2 of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears. HBO's streaming service (MAX) delayed the second episode despite the premiere generating record-setting ratings. There was a meltdown on Twitter (X) about the situation and I gladly joined in. After about an hour and 15 minutes, the show was finally made available on the streaming platform.
I'm not sure which episode was better, the first one or the second one. However, I will say that we got to see the best part of this season in the second episode. This part might not be as memorable for fans as the Theo Benedet performance in episode 1, but it is definitely better and more meaningful.
About midway through episode 2, we start to see highlights from the Chicago Bears game vs the Bills. If you saw the game, you might remember the play when Caleb Williams tried to hit Rome Odunze in the back corner of the end zone. The ball sailed slightly over Odunze's head, but we later found out that Williams was expecting Odunze to do something different with his route.
We see a great learning moment between Williams and Odunze on Hard Knocks that we wouldn't have known about if not for the Bears being on the show this season. The moment should hit hard for Chicago Bears fans. It showcases the chemistry continuing to be built between these two and also their willingness to learn and grow. Furthermore, it shows how dialed in Williams is as a quarterback -- something we aren't exactly used to seeing here in Chicago.
"I wanted you to go back pylon or settle...and I would have ran...that is why the ball went [sailing high motion with his hand]...settle or come get the ball if it is too far of a distance...other than that go back corner"Caleb Willilams to Rome Odunze
"Yeah, I got you. Yeah, I know, cuz I seen him outside so I did not know if he was going to go. Okay, I got you."Rome Odunze response to Caleb Willliams
That wasn't the end of the conversation though. The talk continues...
"You either got to speed cut him or wipe him on that vert or wipe him, you gotta get him going...ahh..aaa!"Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze
You can get the sense that Caleb Williams really wanted to score a touchdown on that play and thought the opportunity was there -- or that he'd at least be able to run and convert a first down and extend the drive. I loved this back-and-forth and expect these two to build something special here in Chicago. Chicago Bears fans should pay close attention to these details. Believe the hype!
