Chicago Bears Free Agency: Jadeveon Clowney, DE

Jadeveon Clowney has become one of the more controversial players in football. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft and made three Pro Bowls during his time with the Houston Texans, but he has bounced around the league since.

A big reason Clowney has been tossed around the league is his inconsistency. He’s 30 years old and still moves well on the field, but the numbers make it hard to determine his trajectory. For reference, Clowney had nine sacks in 2018, three in 2019, zero in 2020, nine in 2021, and two in 2022. The up-and-down nature of Clowney’s career has made it hard for him to be dependable.

On top of the erratic play, Clowney’s character and commitment have been called into question. He was even sent home before the end of last season for making negative comments about his team.

All of this would seemingly disqualify Clowney from being an enticing free agent, but for the right price, he could make a solid addition. Despite everything working against him, having Clowney as a stopgap at edge for the 2023 season wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world.
