The Chicago Bears got some good news early on Sunday morning. According to reports, both wide receiver Keenan Allen and defensive end Montez Sweat are expected to play in the team's 2024 season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Allen and Sweat playing today is no surprised. Despite each veteran spending a bulk of the week participating in practices on a limited capacity, Bears' head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters on Friday that the expectation was for each player to play today.

Sweat playing is especially important given the injuries that the Bears have along the defensive line. Zacch Pickens has already been ruled out for the game while Darrell Taylor and DeMarcus Walker were questionable for the game on the final injury report.

Key Absences and Their Impact

Offensive Impact

  • Tyler Scott's inactive status for the first week of the season is surprising. Scott seemed to be on the inside track toward serving as the team's fourth wide receiver. His inactive status may not have a huge impact on the team's offense, however, given Allen's healthy status for the game.
  • Roschon Johnson had been dealing with an injury for most of the preseason, so it's no surprise to see him miss Sunday's game against the Titans.

Defensive Impact

  • For the fear that the Bears' depth along the defensive line may be in question, the Bears get good news as Sweat, Walker, and Taylor are all active for the game. Dominique Robinson's inactive status for the game may be a great sign for rookie pass rusher Austin Booker.

Special Teams Impact

  • Scott was among the options that the Bears were considering in the return game. It seems that for the first game of the season, the Bears will lean on Velus Jones Jr. and DeAndre Carter.
