Chicago Bears Land Caleb Williams in Post NFL Free Agency Mock Draft
By Peter Jurich
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a massive need at corner after free agency, but adding an explosive athlete like Nate Wiggins would quickly inject the secondary with a lot of talent. Wiggins is a long, rangy cornerback who clocked a jaw-dropping 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. The biggest concern with Wiggins, and why he may drop towards the bottom of the first round, is his weight and subsequently his ability to stick his nose into business at the NFL level. Still, with solid physical development and coaching, Wiggins could become one of the league's premier shutdown corners.
After adding a top offensive weapon at the top of the draft, the Cardinals continue to support Kyler Murray by adding Graham Barton near the end of the first round. At 6'5", 315 lbs, Barton is one of the more interesting offensive linemen in this year's class. Similar to the aforementioned Skoronski from a season prior, Barton played a great deal of tackle in college, but his frame indicates that he may excel better in the NFL as a guard, or potentially even a center. Wherever he ends up positionally, the Cardinals need to reinforce the interior of the offensive line after seemingly cementing their tackle positions over the past 12 months, and a physical, versatile player like Barton could make the quarterback's job significantly easier.
The Buffalo Bills had to cut a lot of veteran defensive players this offseason, yet here the team continues to invest in Josh Allen by giving him another top offensive threat in Xavier Worthy. Perhaps now known best for posting a 4.21 second 40-yard dash last month, Worhty excelled at Texas and was part of an elite receiving duo that propelled the Longhorns to the College Football Playoffs. After the departure of Gabe Davis, the Bills need another receiver to compete for targets with Stefon Diggs, and adding a speedster like Worthy would allow Allen to open up his arm even more, potentially creating a Patrick Mahomes/Tyreek Hill-esque combination in Buffalo.
If Jer'Zhan Newton is available when the Detroit Lions are on the clock, I would expect the draft card to be handed in almost instantaneously. A smaller defensive tackle who is an impressive penetrator as a 3-technique, Newton is an ideal player to pair with star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. With the ability to rush inside or outside, Newton would benefit from opposing offenses game-planning specifically for Hutchinson and could find his way into the quarterback's lap fairly quickly. Newton is also solid against the run, something that is not guaranteed for a player of his stature.
The Baltimore Ravens shock no one by taking one of the most physically gifted and versatile players in this year's draft in Darius Robinson. A veteran of Missouri's defensive line, Robinson varied his weight season to season by up to 20 pounds, allowing him to dominate both as a defensive tackle and defensive end. Baltimore has a long history of finding unique defensive linemen who can play multiple positions, and Robinson could be the next in a long line of greats. Alongside the recently extended Jason Madubuike, the two could pressure even the best interior offensive lines in the NFL.
After missing out on the first group of quarterbacks, the Raiders decide to trade back into the first round in order to select Bo Nix. In the case of the 24-year-old Nix, it makes sense for a team to be aggressive in trying to get him in the first round to secure his potential fifth-year option, and with the Chiefs likely unwilling to do such a movie within the division, the 49ers end up as the Raiders' trade partners. Nix in Vegas would make a lot of sense, as the path to starting is essentially a training camp competition with sophomore Aiden O'Connell. No knock on the latter, but Nix is a more experienced and more talented player who could immediately raise the performance of an offense now under the command of former Bear Luke Getsy. Nix has the physicality that Pierce seems to desire, and he might be the quarterback in this draft who best represents the Raider way.
To wrap up the first round of the draft, the Kansas City Chiefs impossibly improve their offense by adding Adonai Mitchell. The second Texas receiver drafted, Mitchell has the frame and athleticism to become a true WR1 as a professional, and playing with Mahomes would only improve his ceiling. Of course, narratively, it would be fun for Mitchell and Worthy to end up on either side of the fence of one of the premier rivalries in the NFL, but each player is a great option for their prospective QBs, as Mitchell brings a physicality that is otherwise currently lacking in the Chiefs' receiver room. The Chiefs need to continue to reload on offense to keep their dynasty alive, and productive years out of Mitchell early could get this team back to the Super Bowl quickly.
