8 major changes the Chicago Bears need to make
By Ryan Heckman
7. Invest in the trenches
It seems hilarious that a former offensive lineman, turned general manager, has invested so little into his offensive line. Ryan Poles should know better. Last year, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. We knew last year was going to be a down year. But, the least he could have done was spend a valuable draft pick on an offensive lineman.
Instead, with the top three picks from 2022 we have a safety that's down on the field every single game in Jaquan Brisker, a slot cornerback and a wide receiver who isn't even a real wide receiver and cannot hold onto the football.
I think it is safe to say that the Bears would be much better off having spent one of those picks, at minimum, on an offensive lineman. But, Poles opted to go quantity over quality, spending several Day 3 picks on offensive linemen last year.
Finally, this year Poles drafted Darnell Wright in the first round, but most would agree that, in hindsight, he made the wrong decision in passing on a player like Jalen Carter. Poles should be a whole lot smarter than the moves he's made over the past couple of years, but we have yet to see the offensive lineman in him come out yet.
