Chicago Bears must attack this weak area on the Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a rising team, and this will be a significant test for the Chicago Bears. Still, like any team, they have their flaws and there will be chances for the Bears to take advantage. One area where the team must try to attack is the deep passing game.
The Texans have three safeties who are shuffled around a bit. Jimmie Ward is their starting strong safety. He plays more in the box, but the Colts were able to get him in the deep part of the field when Anthony Richardson hit a bomb to Alec Pierce. Ward is getting older and does not have deep speed.
Eric Murray and Calen Bullock were rotating at free safety. Murray has been in the NFL since 2016 and has just 45 career starts, so that tells you the type of player he is. He can be reliable in-depth, but he can be exposed if asked to do too much.
Will the Chicago Bears successfully attack the Houston Texans safeties in week two?
Bullock had an interception in his NFL debut, but the last couple of words there were most important, it was his NFL debut. Bullock is a rookie and a rookie from USC, so Caleb Williams should know him well, including his flaws.
The Bears need to pick on this safety group that features a couple of aging veterans, one primarily a depth player, and then a rookie.
This can mean passes to Cole Kmet, who needs to be involved more, but it also should mean deep shots down the field to D.J. Moore, or even Tyler Scott, who will be asked to fill big shoes this week.
If the Bears want to compete with the Texans, they need a few splash plays. The best way to get them is to attack the weak or unproven parts of the defense.
