The Chicago Bears signed Nathan Peterman, making him the third quarterback on the roster. We recently speculated how the team will add a third quarterback, considering they were going to add one in some form, and we got our answer.

Chicago Bears sign Nathan Peterman to be their third quarterback

Now, the question is whether or not they are done at the position. The Nathan Peterman signing is obviously not exciting, as his reputation has followed him since his rookie season. Peterman will probably not even get a chance to start if both quarterbacks went down.

He is signed on more to be the additional quarterback coach rather than an actual player. Luke Getsy is from Pittsburgh and played at Pitt, and quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko played at Pitt. Nathan Peterman, you guessed it, played at Pitt. There is a connection he has with the coaching staff that goes beyond the field.

The team signed Peterman last year because they wanted to adopt Justin Fields to being more of a pocket passer. When they scrapped that plan and built the offense around Fields, the thought was that Peterman may not be back this season. However, while Fields will be more mobile this year, they do want him to progress in the pocket, and someone like Peterman helps.

Still, if they do get to their third option, they will have to do something. Do they add a fourth arm and have him wait things out on the practice squad? That comes off as unlikely.

While plenty of teams have four quarterbacks, the Bears did not add a fourth last season. Beyond that, this is such a make or break season for Justin Fields that he will hog all of the reps in training camp. On top of that, P.J. Walker is learning a new offense, and that time will be vital for him. There will be no work for a developmental fourth arm, and he will waste his time with the Chicago Bears.

It certainly will not be a draft pick, and while a UDFA may come in for a camp arm, it does look like roster is set. The Chicago Bears are comfortable with Peterman in the meeting rooms, and when you are QB3 that goes farther than what would happen if you are actually on the field.
