This was certainly a better, and more revealing offseason for Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles compared to last year. That is easy to say when you realize the difference in draft capital and cap space that Poles had to work with this time around.

Still, while things definitely went better, there can be holes poked in the offseason as well. Where could the Chicago Bears have done a little bit better?

5. Did Chicago Bears need to spend like that at linebacker?

We knew that Matt Eberflus loved his linebackers, and we knew this was a key piece of the defense. However, the thought initially was that Eberflus and his linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi were so sharp in that area that the team could go cheap there, and get more out of them.

When the Chicago Bears signed TJ Edwards, it was praised. The thought was that between Edwards, and second-year player Jack Sanborn the Chicago Bears had two linebackers who could grow together. Edwards was signed at a bargain, and Sanborn was cost-controlled. Then, they went all-in on Tremaine Edmunds.

This was pretty stunning overall. The thought was that the big salary would go somewhere like defensive tackle, offensive line, or edge rusher. While the Bears did draft a tackle, and two defensive linemen, they were not able to hit the edge rusher. Beyond that, they are hoping these rookies can fill the gaps.

The Edmunds salary could have added depth to key positions, or it could have helped land a big-name edge rusher. Time will tell if this was a smart investment of resources, but for a team with huge needs elsewhere, it was interesting to see them double down on linebacker.
