5 Chicago Bears players in danger after first unofficial depth chart released
By Ryan Heckman
5. Tyrique Stevenson, CB
It seems odd putting second-round pick Tyrique Stevenson on this list, specifically because he seemed to be the unquestioned starter opposite of Jaylon Johnson going into the offseason, firmly based on his draft capital.
But, here we are deep into camp and it's fifth-round pick Terell Smith who is giving Stevenson a run for his money.
Some may look at this as a negative, but it's really not. Ultimately, I think Stevenson keeps his starting gig. But, the fact that the former Minnesota Golden Gopher is performing so well during training camp is a huge positive. Smith now provides the Bears with tremendous depth at the position, especially if he's even being considered in competition for the starting role right now.
Again, cornerback was a position the Bears desperately needed to address and gain not just another starter, but depth behind the starters. In just one offseason, it appears Ryan Poles has done so with drafting Stevenson and Smith.
Smith is a versatile cornerback who has even been used on blitzes in the past, during college. Last year, he totaled 38 tackles, 4.5 for a loss (including 2.0 sacks), five passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble.
