Will Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields become the first Bear to pass for 4,000 yards in 2023?
No Chicago Bears quarterback has ever passed for 4,000 yards in the franchise's proud history. Will Bears quarterback Justin Fields be the first Bears passer to accomplish this feat?
Justin Fields could make Chicago Bears history
The Bears' single-season record for passing yards is held by Erik Kramer, who launched 3,838 yards in 1995, per Pro Football Reference. This was followed by Jay Cutler's 2014 campaign when he passed for 3,812 yards.
The Bears are the only franchise to never have a player pass for 4,000 yards in a season. Established in 1920 and one of the oldest teams in the NFL, the Bears' history at the quarterback position is shaky at best.
Fields, a dual-threat quarterback, accumulated 3,385 total offensive yards and 25 total touchdowns last season, so he's not far off in terms of total offensive production.
His 1,143 rushing yards last season were the second most all-time, behind only Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who rushed for 1,206 yards in 2019, per StatMuse. He also led the No. 1 rushing offense in the NFL last season.
There's no denying that Fields can get it done with his arm and his legs. Since next season will be his third in the league, his game will almost certainly grow, especially as a passer. An NFL player's third season is a good indication of who they are as a player and what they can become.
Take Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, for example. He led the Eagles to the NFC title and was an MVP candidate in his third season. Now, he just became the highest-paid player in NFL history, signing a 5-year, $255 million contract, per The Athletic.
This isn't to say that Fields will have a trancesndent season like Hurts did last year. But it is saying that Fields is in a prime position to have a breakout year and become the first Bears quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season.
The Bears are fully invested in Fields. They traded away the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft to the Carolina Panthers for a King's ransom. The blockbuster deal gave Fields a new weapon in wide receiver D.J. Moore, and they could be using the draft picks they acquired through this trade to pick up another playmaker for Fields.
They also signed sure-handed tight end Robert Tonyan and offensive lineman Nate Davis this offseason.
Now, with an improved and fine-tuned offensive line, Fields will have more time to throw in the pocket and he'll have better options to sling the ball to. Instead of running for his life and scrambling out of the pocket, we might get a chance to see a poised Fields this season during his second year in Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus' offense.
Time will tell whether Fields will pass for 4,000 yards or not, but he has the tools to make it happen now.
