Chicago Bears Under Pressure In 2023: Justin Fields, QB

As good as Justin Fields was running the football a year ago, his style of play led to far too many hits and just isn’t sustainable in today’s NFL. Uber-athletic quarterbacks have become hot commodities, but it’s the ones that utilize their athleticism to bolster the passing game that have become sought after.

Fields was done no favors his first two years in the league. Two different play callers and a less-than-stellar supporting cast made what was already a difficult task seemingly impossible. But excuses can only get you so far, and fans won’t be nearly as forgiving of Fields’ blunders in 2023.

It’s hard to be a franchise quarterback without being a polished passer. Fields was able to bypass this tule a season ago, but no one wants a repeat of 2022. The good news is Fields has the necessary tools to, at least in theory, improve. Traits such as arm strength and ability to throw are a big reason why the Bears' front office is still so confident in Fields’ potential.

Through two seasons, Fields has shown enough promise to keep the bulk of the Bears’ front office and fanbase on board. But at some point, those flashes will need to be more consistent. 2023 will undoubtedly be a crucial part of the Bears’ evaluation of Fields.
