3 Chicago Bears players who won't survive the preseason
- A second-year pro running out of time
- A second-year running back buried on the depth chart
- A surprise cut at defensive end?
By Ryan Heckman
3. Dominique Robinson, DE
This is a bit of a bold prediction, but let's just try and sort through the Bears' defensive ends for a moment. Here are the guys I have Chicago keeping on the roster as of this very moment:
Yannick Ngakoue
DeMarcus Walker
Trevis Gipson
Rasheem Green
Terrell Lewis
That's five at the pass rusher position. Do the Bears really end up keeping six? If Dominique Robinson doesn't prove himself in the coming weeks, he could be gone. The one guy I could see Robinson sticking around over is Green, who also needs to do something to "wow" the Bears in the coming weeks.
Robinson came in last year as a Day 3 pick who showed a lot of promise as a rookie in 2022, but his first preseason game wasn't especially impressive. Meanwhile, that game was all about Gipson and Lewis, who were always making a move toward the quarterback. Gipson looks like he's coming back up the depth chart with a vengeance, and Lewis finally appears to be finding a home in the NFL as a former Alabama standout.
I like Robinson and think he could have a place on this roster, but the defensive end position is becoming far too competitive when it once looked like a serious weakness for the Bears. If Robinson turns things around and plays well in his final two preseason games, he could stick around. But as of right now, I don't see it happening.
