We are counting down the Chicago Bears roster by as the dog days of summer continue. This list will be looking at which players have the best chance to make the roster and which players have the biggest impact when it comes to who wins and loses games in the 2023 season. We are still early on the list with our number 84 player, Daurice Fountain.

Chicago Bears roster ranking 2023: No. 84 WR Daurice Fountain

Daurice Fountain was a 2018 fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts. Like all Colts picks under Chris Ballard, he checked the boxes for height, weight, and speed. However, coming from Northern Iowa, he won because he was a better athlete than his opponents, not because he was more skilled. This showed in the NFL, where he struggled to find a role on an NFL roster. Ankle surgery derailed one season, but after four years with the Colts, he moved on to Kansas City.

Still, after spending a year on the Chiefs practice squad, he still could not find the roster. The Chicago Bears signed him in October of 2022 when they had nearly no wide receiver depth. He signed a futures contract in January, thinking this may be the best depth chart for him to be on. However, the team did everything they could to add to this room.

D.J. Moore and Tyler Scott were the big additions. When you factor in Darnell Mooney is healthy and Chase Claypool is still around, there are four spots right there. The Chicago Bears started Dante Pettis and Equanimeous St. Brown over Fountain last year, and these guys are on the roster bubble.

Even Velus Jones has return game upside to point to, while Fountain has not made many rosters because he is not a significant role player on special teams.

There was some hype for Fountain coming out of OTAs, mainly because he looks the part. However, he is a veteran who is here to push the bottom of the depth chart guys. When the pads come on, the chances of Fountain sticking on the roster may get slim.
