The countdown until the Chicago Bears retake the field is underway. Meanwhile, we are counting down the 90-man roster to see which players bring the most value to the table. This will look at the 2023 season only and will handicap who has the best chance to make the Bears roster and which players will bring the most wins and losses to the team. We are early into the list with number 83 today, Macon Clark.

Chicago Bears 2023 roster ranking: No. 84 DB Macon Clark

Macon Clark is a rookie UDFA from Tulane. He spent five years with the Green Wave, three as a starter. His time was paid off with a huge Bowl win against USC, and a chance to earn a roster spot at an NFL training camp.

Macon Clark finished his career with 696 snaps in the box, 1,216 snaps as a slot, 474 in the deep safety role, and then 62 snaps as a cornerback. With that in mind, he will be expected to have versatility on his side, but also he will be competing in the box, and in the slot.

The issue with him being in those spots is that this is where the Chicago Bears are at their strongest. At safety, Jaquan Brisker is locked down as the starter. Beyond that, Elijah Hicks and Kendall Williamson have roles with invested draft picks. Clark could beat out both but is an underdog. Even Adrian Colbert is currently over him in that depth chart.

In the slot, Kyler Gordon is holding it down. Still, even beyond him is Josh Blackwell. Blackwell was a UDFA last year so that Clark could take the same route. Still, Blackwell excelled on special teams and held his own in the slot when needed. Also, Blackwell was cut from his original team before catching on with the Chicago Bears.

That may end up being the best bet for Clark. He is currently the third-string slot when training camp comes around, with A.J. Thomas and Adrian Colbert holding down third-string safety roles. We will see if he can rise. For now, he sits closer to the back of the roster.
