Chicago Bears Position Group No. 5: Quarterback

Quarterback is a difficult position to rank because the strength of the room really comes down to how good the starter is. Justin Fields still has some questions to answer in 2023, but for right now, the quarterback should be considered one of the team’s strengths.

Contrary to popular belief, Fields had never been much of a rushing quarterback. He used his ability to buy more time as a passer and

occasionally looked for running lanes. This led to many labeling Fields as more of an athlete than a rusher.

However, 2022 brought out a different side of Fields. The passing attack just wasn’t effective enough, and the Bears had to find another form of offense. This is what causes Fields to take on a new role in the offense, and he did it well, becoming only the third quarterback in league history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season.

Rushing wasn’t meant to be Fields’ strong suit in the NFL; it was more of an adapted function, which makes his 2022 all the more impressive. There may be some projection involved in calling Fields a “strength,” but the truth was he was the only thing keeping the offense afloat at times last season.
