Chicago Bears Roster: 5 Strongest position groups heading into 2023

Chicago Bears Position Group No. 3: Running Back
Letting David Montgomery walk in free agency was a necessary evil. He was a reasonably effective runner and brought a lot of energy to the offense, but there’s no reason to strive for mediocrity, and Montgomery was just that.
Montgomery’s predecessor, Jordan Howard, suffered a similar fate in Chicago despite being statistically better. In short, running back isn’t the type of position teams should go out of their way to invest serious resources in. The Bears have followed the model perfectly and have assembled a cheap yet talented running back room.
Khalil Herbert has been one of the most efficient rushers in football since entering the league in 2021. However, concerns about his ability as a pass catcher and blocker led many to question his ability as an every-down back.
The good news for both Herbert and Chicago is he won’t have to be a workhorse in 2023. Adding D’onta Foreman and Roschon Johnson gives the Bears a contrast of styles at the position. This isn’t even including Travis Homer, who is expected to take on more of a special teams role the team but could still receive some touches.
The Bears had one of the best rushing attacks in football last year, and they will have the personnel to yield similar results in 2023 if needed.
