Chicago Bears Position Group No. 2: Linebacker

Let’s face it, the Bears didn’t heavily invest in the linebacker position the way they did this offseason to get average play. Chicago kicked off free agency with a bang, signing Eagles linebacker T.J Edwards to a very affordable multi-year deal, and broke the bank for Tremaine Edmunds. All in all, the Bears are slated to pay upwards of 91 million dollars to the two over the next four years.

Additionally, they drafted Noah Sewell out of Oregon, who should provide some much-needed juice as a passer rusher. These acquisitions, alongside rookie standout Jack Sanborn, make for a promising group.

For the last few years, the Bears' linebacker room has been very top-heavy. After Roquan Smith, there was a considerable gap in both talent and production. Although none of the individual linebackers currently on the roster can match Smith’s value, this newfound depth should lead to a more balanced unit.

The Chicago Bears have always been known for their stellar linebacker play. 2023 could be a return to their old form. It’s not quite Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, but it’s the deepest the position has been for some time. The combination of talent and youth gives this group a lot of potential for 2023 and beyond.
