Bears Rumors: 5 AFC coaching candidates to replace Matt Eberflus

On the hottest of seats, Matt Eberflus likely won't survive the 2024 offseason.

2. Mike Macdonald, Defensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens

There is just one defensive candidate we're going to talk about, and it's Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. I know we all want an offensive-minded coach instead of going with someone along the same lines as Eberflus. But, Macdonald is worth mentioning.

The Ravens are currently the best defense in football, giving up the fewest yards and points per game through Week 13. They are also first in sacks, so it's no coincidence that Macdonald should get some consideration as a head coach.

The irony here would be incredible, too, as Macdonald's leader on that unit is former Bears linebacker Roquan Smith. Macdonald coming over to Chicago would mean the Bears are once-again a defensive-focused football team, but that they would have to hire a great offensive mind to come in and work with whomever the quarterback is.

If the Bears hired Macdonald, they'd absolutely have to get the offensive coordinator right. It could not end up being another Luke Getsy situation, because that experiment is clearly not working. Macdonald would bring an intensity and focus back to the "Monsters of the Midway," but the offense cannot take a back seat.
