Chicago Bears Rumors: Latest update on Justin Fields trade
The first quarterback trade of the NFL Off-season has been agreed upon, but it's not the trade many Chicago Bears fans have anticipated.
The New England Patriots are sending 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a late-round pick.
Jones will now serve as the primary backup to Trevor Lawrence, the main reason why the Patriots were able to complete a trade before the Bears were able to deal away Justin Fields.
The latest from Dan Graziano or Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is that the Bears are remaining patient regarding the eventual trade of Fields. The belief is that the Bears will wait until a resolution on the free agency statuses of Kirk Cousins and Baker Mayfield before finalizing a Fields trade.
In a perfect world, Cousins returns to the Minnesota Vikings and Mayfield returns to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That would leave the Atlanta Falcons without a quarterback, leading them to pivot back to Fields.
It's becoming increasingly clear that across the NFL, teams do not view Fields as a legitimate answer at the quarterback position. That would be the reason why the Patriots were able to deal Jones as there was an indication on both sides that the former University of Alabama quarterback would be a backup with his next team.
The Chicago Bears plan to trade Justin Fields may come into focus this week.
Based on the Bears' initial asking price, they clearly are selling Fields as a starting quarterback. The Bears don't have the greatest of leverage considering it's widely believed the team is selecting Caleb Williams with the first overall selection next month but all it takes is one team to believe in the current quarterback of the Bears.
The situation with Fields could play out in the way that it did with Nick Foles and the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020. After the initial wave of free agency that off-season, the Jaguars traded Foles to the Bears for a conditional fourth-round pick.
