There is a strong chance that current Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields will open the 2024 season as a backup quarterback.

The first week of the NFL Free Agency this off-season has proven that teams may not value Fields as a starting quarterback. The Bears have been unable to trade Fields with the timeline of the team's decision at the quarterback position now shifting closer to the NFL Draft at the end of April.

Next week will be essential for the quarterback's decision for the Bears. The Bears will send a large contingency to the USC Pro Day to check the final boxes of their evaluation of Caleb Williams. Assuming Williams' visit to Halas Hall and medical assessment is completed with the Bears in the following days, that is likely when the team will shift their priority to moving Fields.

If a trade is indeed the outcome for Fields, the belief is it will be one of two scenarios; either Fields is dealt to a team that was unable to address their starting quarterback need in the 2024 NFL Draft or, more likely, the Bears' quarterback is dealt to a team in need of a backup quarterback.

The team to keep an eye on may be the Philadelphia Eagles for Justin Fields

After Gardner Minshew's deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Philadelphia Eagles are in need of a new backup quarterback to Jalen Hurts. Charles of Robinson of Yahoo Sports makes the case for Fields to the Eagles.

"It’s certainly not the obvious choice that the starting jobs of the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers represented only a week ago. But the obvious path is gone for Fields and the Bears. Now is when things get creative. And there are few teams and general managers who embrace creativity and opportunity better than the Eagles and Roseman."

If not with the Bears, the Eagles may be the next best option for Fields. Fields can sit behind Hurts for a season, the quarterback that he has been compared to the most, and then be in a position to be an appealing free agent next off-season.
