Chicago Bears move on from Rex Grossman, retirement, and life after football

Following the season, Grossman was again a free agent, but the Chicago Bears were no longer interested in his services after the acquisition of Jay Cutler via a trade with the Denver Broncos. The former 25th overall pick eventually signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, where he would serve as Matt Schaub's backup. After the year, Grossman signed another backup-caliber contract with the Washington Redskins, but conditions would allow the former Chicago Bear with another opportunity at being a franchise's starting quarterback.

Initially, Grossman entered the 2010 season as the team's backup, but an injury to starter Donovan McNabb forced the Bloomington native into the starting role. Grossman led the team for three games, finishing with seven touchdowns and four interceptions, an improvement in his efficiency compared to his recent years.

The next year, the team moved on from McNabb and allowed Grossman to serve as the full-time starting quarterback. There, he played in 13 games throughout the season but finished with a 5-8 record due to a troubling 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. After the year, Grossman re-upped with the Redskins, primarily to serve as a mentor to Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins, but the former Gator did not log an appearance throughout the year.

Grossman spent short stints with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, but after not playing for over three years, the quarterback officially retired from the NFL following the 2015 season. Across his career, Grossman spent the most time with the Chicago Bears, where he logged 31 regular season starts in six seasons. Grossman was never the lights-out playmaker that he was at Florida, but inteam history, he still ranks within the top 15 for franchise passing touchdowns and yards despite playing in so few games.

Following his NFL career, Grossman has spent time back in the state of Florida, working with his wife at their nursing company, Florida Medical Staffing. The company provides medical employees to the greater Florida area, and Grossman appreciates being away from the spotlight and closer to his family.
